Great Fly Fishing

The last few days we have been  into some great fly fishing. The surface activity seems to be right on the tide change. Mostly the first hour or two of the incoming.  Plenty of smaller fish but there are some bigger ones in there also.  Managed to round up a nice 32 and a 34, a heck of a time on an 8 weight.  Hopefully this continues as these feeds are really exciting.  We still have openings to head out there. And again if you would like to give this type of fishing a shot, we would love to teach you how to fly fish.

Saturday Stripers

All Smiles!

Saturday was a super day with Karl, Nick and Liesel. They have been out with us a few times now and it is always a pleasure to have them aboard. The fishing was great and the company was even better. Bass are still around. For you Fly fisherman out there we are still seeing surface feeds. If you would like a quick trip early am or evening after work let us know. We can arrange something for special hours and pricing. Tight Lines -FTGS!

Tuesday Tuna

Tuesday, July 27th, Dave and Greg joined us again for a trip to get some fresh tuna for the freezer. Greg had been with us last year when we landed a great fish to end the season. Dave was with us the year before and unfortunately, although we hooked several tuna, we weren’t able to land one for him that time. This time would be different! It was an epic day with 4 tuna bites on the kite! We kept one of the fish, a fat 58″ tuna. Great job Greg and Dave…

Bass for the Bachelor Party

Headed out on Saturday, July 30th for a recovery trip from the 3rd day into Matt’s bachelor party. Burke, Matt, Elliot and Val boarded the boat for a little R&R from their festivities. Bait was hard to come by… We scoured the area looking for bait and signs of bass feeds. After loading up some baits, we went in search of the spots we knew to produce some good bass. I think the fish decided to take a day off, but within a a few hours of leaving the dock, we saw feeds all over the harbor and race was on. Matt was the first to hook up and had a nice bass to the boat. Then Val and finally Burke… It was a run and gun kind of day on the big boat, but still produced some fish in the final hours.

Hope the rest of the festivities went well and we have have to get you guys out for tuna next time!!

Bringin a little Southern Style to the Northeast

July 23rd, we had the Texas crew on board for what was probably one of the funnier crews we have had along. This was a trip to remember, good and bad… Ralston’s crew showed up and we headed out in search of tuna, but what we found for the first several hours was bass, blue fish and a good lightening storm that made our day just a little crazier. We were hearing of tuna being caught and searched for the right area to get set up. Shortly after the lightening fried our kite, we got everything set out again. Luckily Ralston whispered something to the 80 reel and within a few minutes we were tight to a tuna on our balloon bait. a few of the guys took turns reeling in their prize and 30 minutes later, it was harpooned and tied up to the boat. I’m sure the photos/video will end up somewhere on YoTube!! It was a long day on the water, but worth it to watch the wasabi and soy come out at the dock for some of the freshest tuna you can imagine.

Thanks for laughs… Fat Tuna Guides

Patience pays off

We were fortunate enough to have Matt, Dave and Nikki on board for a trip in search of tuna on July 22nd. We had an early start at 430 am since we have been running to the south off of PTown where the tuna have stayed until lately. After almost a 2 hour run to get to the area where we wanted to set up, we arrived to find tons of life, whales, birds, etc… The tuna are there, but we had to weed through the bass and blues to get to them. After a few hours of catching these little guys, we were ready for the tuna to take the bait. At about 1pm and after running to several different areas, we finally got what we were looking for… TUNA. Our balloon bait went off and Dave grabbed the rod. After about 25 minutes, we had a 58 inch Bluefin to the boat and tied off. Great day for all and some food to go home with.

Thanks to the crew from Buffalo and we hope to see you again!

Tuna Are In! Gotta travel for ‘em though

Had a great week last week, and hoping this front goes through quickly so we can get back fishing.

Multiple hookups with a few slot fish was Fattuna’s week last week. Driving forty miles to get in to the fish is not ideal, but necessary.

Stripers unsettled early

Striper fishing has been crazy feast or famine lately. The East wind, and up and down water temps have everything completey up in the air as far as feeding patterns. This time last week, the water temp was 62… Last night… 73!!

Hopefully things get organized quick.

It’s Getting Nautical

Went out Thursday (sorry for late post… been fishing) in not so hot weather and seas. We started at a spot that a bud told us about. Was hard to see feeds in 4 to 6 footers, but we managed to find some great sustained ones. By the way… the pics do not accurately show the seas we were in. Managed three takes with one legit hook up. Fought the fish for thirty minutes before it popped. We had our takes on two ounce metals, and poppers.

I know it has been said a million times before, but please, please, please check all of your equipment before casting to these guys. Although there are little ones in the mix, it seems the bigger guys get hooked up more often these days. In our case, we inspected our Stella after the fact, and noticed my power roller had raw metal showing on half of it. This is the first problem that I have ever had with these reels. I guess no tackle is perfect.

Stripers are Loving The Stanley Cup Finals!!

Bruins have tied it up. The Bass are also very excited. So is Bob.

Stripers are Here!!

The season is on gang. Reports are coming in that there have been some surface feeds in the harbors. The bait seems to be small so smaller plastics or swimmers are a good bet. For the fly guys, small decievers, clousers should produce. Call us to book a trip, and we can always arrange quick fly fishing trips early morning or after work for reduced rates. If you are new to fly fishing and want to give it a try, let us know we would love to get you out there. Good Luck and Tight Lines!! -FTGS

Sunday Tuna

Sunday was a good day . Made way out to Bakers to grab Macs, easy pick thanks to a buddy who found the big school. (Thanks EZE). Decided to head a bit northeast and work a line from SNL to T.I. Hit SNL and talked to buddies on the radio. North was quiet, southeast some sporadic  action.  O.K I’ll search around here for awhile see what happens. Thought about going to the bank but with the wind forecast it was the last place I wanted to be in a 20 footer. Decided to keep it close. Didn’t see much so I headed a bit east. Still nothing. With the wind picking up a bit I turned around and headed back to my original spot. What the heck I’ll toss a livey over. I was rigging up and all of a sudden I see action off my bow. Beaks! Moving fast but no sign of tuna busting. Hmmm ok this is a good sign. They got to be here somewhere. I grab the Stella/FLA custom spinning rod and begin to arm it with a halfbeak plug. Then Hello!!!!!!! Good morning Tuna!. I finished tying on the plug and in a blink they are down. Nuemann. 5 minutes later I see the beaks again about 100 yards away, Put the boat in gear head towards them, Tuna crashing, I slow the boat down, head towards the bow, ready…aim… and .. I whiff on the cast. ****. Went dead right not even close!!!  Tuna go down again. Well that sucked. Few minutes later same thing but this time I’m ready. Beaks jumping, moving, I make the best cast of my life leading them perfectly, plug comes off a wave and the Tuna crushed it in mid air. Unreal take.
Game On!!!! Fought this one for about and hour and ten minutes and the thing would not quit, one hand on the rod one on the throttle to maneuver the boat ect. But I wasn’t giving up either. I finally get it close boat side and see that it is in the slot, I’m getting banged around at this point pretty good in the chop and reach for the leader then the gaff…nope, no dice almost went in the drink. Fish screams off another 60 yards of line right towards a high flyer… Double Farts!!.. Back to the drawing board. Head towards him again, we do the dance again, comes along and still I can’t gaff him. 0-2. Enough is enough. With the seas and wind coming on, and not trying to be a hero, I call my buddy John on the horn and ask him if he wants to stick this fish. Thankfully he comes over hops on the Jones; we get the fish close, gaff him and bring him over the gunnel. A high five and John goes back to his vessel. Thanks buddy. I’m staring at a fat 55” that kicked my ass.
I Bleed him out, but don’t have time to gut him. I got to get the hell out of there and back to Beverly as it was getting a bit nastyfor the vessel. Finally made my way into the harbor, reached into the cooler and grabbed a beer; and made a toast to a good fight, great friends and the dinner on my deck.

Hello Fall

September is almost gone. That is sad, but we hope that October will bring in some better fishing. The fishing has not been terrible, but it has not been gangbusters either like the June we had.  Bob has been working the Tuna quite regularly with fish caught and released  frequently.  Hopefully October will set up to be a classic and continue the good fishing we have had in seasons past. Inshore has been hit or miss, Reports have shown that a nighttime bite with tube and worm along the rocks can produce, or a weighted sluggo casting into the wash can get you a striper or two. The fly fishing has been the same way toward the structure, but there has not been the typical fall fast and furious in our harbor.  Hopefully an influx of bait will do the trick.  Had a chance to catch an Albie on the fly this week. Our friend Rob put out a grateful invite for the quest.   Hooked up and dropped it.  Bummer.  Here is a great pic of our friend Rob catching one the other day.  Beautiful.  Looking forward to this month ahead.

Good luck out on the water-  FTGS

Early August Report

Well sorry for the lack of posts recently, been really busy fishing!  This year has been great for charters.  The tuna bite has been great for a few days then off for a few  and when its been on its been on.  There have been days when we have seen jumpers in the 40lb to 200lb range going ballistic, and days when its been slow. The weather has been fantastic, and the baitfish are all over the place.  This is a great sign and should set up to be an epic fall.  The inshore stuff has been a little of the same.  IT all depends if you hit it right.  There have been some surface feeds off Misery, and Bakers usually in the early evening.  The bluefish have been in there as well so make sure you got your steel handy.

Good Luck-   FTGS

Stripers

Had a wonderful charter yesterday. Steamed up north a bit to see if we could find Charlie. No luck. However we did  find a nice group of stripers in deeper water.  These guys had a blast with over 2+ hours of catch and release.  Thanks guys it was great.

Big Water Big Bass w Trev

Went out over the weekend and did some bass fishin with Trev Gowdy.  We caught some seroius striper in deeper water.  We also had one of the biggest stripers hit our bait and miss, the swirl and splash was huge. Might have been the 50lb er we were looking for.  It was an awsome day out there with really big fish staying hungry. Nice to see.
